Thank you for taking the time to visit Uncle Dave's Cycling Archive. The site is the brainchild of yours truly, David Covey aka Uncle Dave, and the content - unless otherwise noted - is written by myself or Andy Powers. Andy does most of the writing and I do all the editing. We hope you like it.
If you would like to place a link to these pages on your own website, then "thank you". I won't guarantee to reciprocate as the only links I'm currently including are those relevant to specific pages. If you think a site might be of interest, then please email us (there is an email link elsewhere on this page). If you do link to us, then please make sure that you only link to the Site Entry Page as the name of other pages may change without notice or be deleted.
The following notes may be of some use or interest to you. Click on the link
to go to the subject concerned:
I've tried to avoid the problems I myself have encountered when surfing the web - inappropriate use of large graphics, large pages which take time to download, unproven scripts and so on. Every page is tested using the latest generally released version of both Netscape and MSIE and you should have no problems if you're using either of these.
Because their usefulness is limited, and in order to make the site accessible to all I've not used frames. I don't expect to ever do so, as for every site where there's a good reason for using them there are a thousand where their use is at best cosmetic and at worst disastrous. Similarly, apart from scrolling text and anything required by my web hosts, I don't expect to use Java in the near future. All this may change of course, but for the moment my main aim is to make the site as universally compatible as I can.
If you do have problems they are most likely specific to your browser.
If you find a problem that you only get here then please email me and let me know about
it. I don't promise to fix it but I might know a man who can - make sure
to give me all the relevant details (there is an email link elsewhere on this page).

Some pages have image maps. In order to use these, you have to first either enable the option to load graphics automatically in your browser's Options or Preferences menu or hit the relevant menu button. Where image maps are used, you will always find a text link alternative for every URL in the map.
At the bottom of each page you will either find a link back to the subject page you just came from or a standard menu bar to the main site area menus. If one of these links should fail please let me know - the "Back" arrow or button on your browser should return you to whence you came.
If you follow a link to another web site then you will need to use the "Back" arrow or button on your browser (or the Go list if you have one) to return.
From time to time I will update the Site Map but can't guarantee
to keep it slap bang up-to-date.

Philosophy? Moi?! We're here because we love the sport of cycling. Andy has the sort of memory that defies the laws of nature - a lot of what you read by him is writen without artificial aids - and I do my best to hang it all together into a coherent whole. We hope to appeal to people who share that love of bike racing. If we don't let us know. If we do let us know!
I've tried to learn from other peoples' mistakes and make this a place that people will want to come back to. Whether I've been successful is for you, the reader, to judge, but I hope that if you are interested in cycling that you will return for more.
At the moment, we're exclusively about road and track cycle racing, mostly professional
and, again "mostly" the last thirty years. This will change over time but for the moment
we've enough subject material to keep us busy for some time to come! Having spent a few
hours searching for suitable links to include in our features, it seems to me that we are going
to fill a gap in the web. Although there are a lot of sites dealing with modern day racing,
some with excellent palmares and some (like the Tour de France site) with short
articles on specific races from the past, I didn't find anywhere that delves into the
subject quite as we do.
If you know any similar sites then please let us know and we'll try and co-operate rather
than duplicate!

Some pages are copyright their writers and such copyright is displayed on the pages concerned. All other pages are ©David Covey and where appropriate includes a copyright notice in the HTML script. Reproduction of any of these pages is not a problem provided you let me know in advance of your intention in the case of pages not bearing a copyright mark of the author. Where you wish to use the work of other writers featured here, please contact me and I will put you in touch with the person concerned. The views expressed in these pages are sometimes mine, sometimes just the same as mine, sometimes diametrically opposed to mine, but never never ever those of Margaret Thatcher, and I accept no responsibility for articles originated by others except as a pubishing medium.
Graphics I use are either my own creation, freely available on the web or
from my own obscure collection of old out-of-print books and long dormant magazines.
If you can prove copyright please contact me and I will remove the item concerned
or add a copyright note, whatever you want. If it's money you're after - forget it.
I'll delete the offending item and you can go down in history as a miserable git...

Email You can contact us HERE
Guestbook We have a guestbook. If you would like to comment on our site (we suggest
something simple along the lines of "this is the most superb web site in the world ever
and I would like to contribute several million [insert your favourite currency here] towards
its continued upkeep") or read what others have written about us, then please follow
THIS LINK
Contributions If you would like to contribute to these pages I'm always happy to receive ideas - please email me using the link above. I won't guarantee to use your stuff, but if you have a love of your subject - maybe you're a fan of a specific rider - and can translate that into readable prose then I would be happy to consider your contributions. As I say I, I won't promise anything. Except that you won't get any form of recompense!
Mailing Lists Because of the irregular nature of our updates, we have an announcement mailing list. The list is used solely for us to distribute information and is not available to third parties. You will only get announcement information and the simple personal information we ask for helps us to know our readership a little. Here's how to join...
Once we have enough regular visitors, I hope to start a discussion list. Should that come to fruition, I will announce it loud and clear!
Enjoy!
